i would really appreciate your advice on this hardware problem i have. My dvd drive is not working like it should do, it has been playing up for a while (having to reinsert the disk to get it to play) but i have now bought a completely legitimate packaged copy of the game “Halo 2″ and my laptop isnt even recognising the disk as anything! It just makes the classic horrible noises of a loading (trying to load) dvd drive and doesnt even recognise a disk! all other disks i have play eventually even if it takes a few tries, its only halo 2! i have tried updating drivers and have done a full reinstall of my system with no change. I have also taken the laptop back to pc world but they just gave me a number to call to get it repaired (premium rate number. . . . )

should i just claim the warrenty from the number i was given? is this a good idea? thx

Hi,
i’m using windows XP professional and i got a fake alert – Microsoft Essentials Alert – saying that my PC was infected with the Win32 trojan and i downloaded malwarebytes and it found and removed not only this trojan but another – vundo? – as well!. Anyhow i re run my anti vitus software (AVG), and everything seems fine now however, i cannot get Internet Explorer to work at all – i am using firefox at the moment. I need to know how to get IE back working as i am concerned that windows is not being updated etc. I do not know what to do as i have tried most of the suggestions i’ve come across on the web but nothing works. My friend has said that one of the registry keys may have been changed by the virus or even deleted by malwarebytes – this is common apparently – and i need to run sfc/scannow to repair any of the registry keys. Now, i’m happy to do this but i’m afraid that this might make things worse as how can i be sure the registry keys are not infected? and also will running sfc/scannow mean that my system will be restored to the factory status and my data might be lost?

Please someone help me or make a suggestion as to what i can do to get my IE back

i forgot to say thati have tried all the reset options and checked all the settings for IE and none of them have worked. i’ve also created another user account on the PC to see if that was where the problem was but this ‘new’ user account could not get IE to work either. I think it may be something to do with a regstry key that was removed by malwarebytes or a corrupt key – like my friend has suggested -
thanks for your suggestion but i’ve already done this and there was no . bat file or anything.
Does anyone know whether sfc /scannow will reset my pc back to the initial stage or will it simply ‘fix’ the broken registry files???

okay so i have a problem with my windows XP computer. One day a few months ago it stopped working all of a sudden. Im determined to fix it as i want to retrieve all my old photos and documents i have on the hard drive. What happens is when i turn computer on, after it showed the black and white DOS screen or whatever it was, nothing happens, i only get a black screen and cant to anything. i rebooted the PC lots of times and have been getting the same result. i even tried inserting a windows cd in order to format it but when it says that f i press any key and this will run the cd i do that and nothing happens i get a black screen again. it seems like there is nothing i can do to repair it, i wondered it if might of been a damaged HDD? or something? has anyone ever had this before or knows what i can do to make it work again? thanks

I recently had a problem with a computer with XP Pro installed. I sent in the computer to a repair shop and they rang me up later saying they needed to reinstall windows. I didn’t give them my install disc so they said they would use their own.

Once I got my PC back I tried to activate windows using my product key, but the wizard says it is invalid.

My PC originally had counterfeit windows on it (I was unaware of this for over a year), so I had to purchase a copy off microsofts website. It was a genuine advantage kit. I am trying to use this key to activate windows.

After some research I have a suspicion that perhaps the shop used an OEM windows CD and so my key doesn’t work.

I really don’t want to pay for another reinstall of windows, nor do I want to reinstall all my programs AGAIN. How can I activate my copy of windows without a reinstall.

In case it matters, my retail CD has SP2 installed on it while my computer has been installed with a CD with SP3 on it.
