My IBM Lenovo 3000 C100 laptop has crashed and is giving the following error message when I turn it on. . .

’Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt

\windows\system 32\config\system

You can attempt to repair this file by starting windows set up using the original set up CD Rom

Select R on the first screen to start repair’’

I cannot find the Windows XP Disc that came with the laptop, i’ve been told I can use any XP disc and it does not have to be the same one that was supplied. Is this correct? will this work? will there be any issues with using another disc that has been used before on another pc becuase of the serial numbers etc. . any help grately appriciated!

Thanks
I’ve got a Microsoft Office Home and Student disc that I got with a Dell Laptop which is Vista. Will this work to reinstall Windows on an IBM XP machine?

Hello, i bought a pc about 2 months ago, it had been a display only model but now i am using it and everything was fine up until about 2 weeks ago. First the internet starting cutting out and then about a week ago it just refused to connect to the internet even though the internet was getting a full signal but then i looked into it and it gave me a message along the lines of device or resource not responding.

So my first thought was to run a virus scanner (AVG) and it came up with nothing, then still it wasnt working, so i tried malewarebytes scanner and it came up with nothing. Then i turned my computer on and it froze, then i turned it on and off and it worked for a bit started to play Red Faction Guerilla and it froze and said there was an issue so i ran windows startup repair and then just said disk read error press ctrl alt del and now my pc just starts up and does the same thing over and over. . . .

Any help!!! thanks

Windows xp restart loop, virus in registry?

Hi chaps and ladies,

My friend from work has a problem and I took his pc to try and fix it.
When booting, it gets to the “windows xp loading screen – with the scrolling bar underneath” and then it just re-boots.

It asks everytime if you want to start in safe mode/last good config but still will not load.

I thought maybe a bad sector on the hdd, but after looking around I have seen that it could be a virus which has changed the registry.

I currently have the hdd in ‘my’ pc running as a slave but can’t find any viruses as-of yet, I DO NOT have a win xp cd so I can’t recover/repair.

Is there a way to ‘reset’ the registry on his hdd while using mine to run the computer. . . . ?

sorry if any confusion, I have his hdd in my pc and want to fix a restart error on his hdd.

thanks

Darren
ok, dvdclarke is useless, just after points. . .

Thanks the other two, I understand the linux route, but is there a way to. . “copy my boot settings off my hdd, and paste them onto his drive?”

the only other way I can think of is downloading a version of windows from a ‘friend’ and trying to use repair installiation (would I need windows key for this?)
Adding to this,
I have put his hdd in my pc as a master also and same happens where it just re-boots itself over and over.

I do not have a win xp cd so cannot get to the ‘recovery console’ I am in the process of downloading a win cd but was hoping there was a way to look/edit his registry from my pc

Windows 7 Problem, Windows 7 Will not boot!?

Ok, i was downloading some virus free software from CNET. com and all of a sudden my laptop running 32bit windows 7 ultimate edition froze making a constant loud low toned bleep sound. I left it for a minute or two before the noise became too much so i turned it off (thinking a simple hard restart would do the trick) but it didn’t and now windows wont load normally.

When i turn on my laptop it says windows is loading files and then after it has finished it will boot into startup repair which cannot find anything wrong and restarts and the cycle starts over again(automatic restart, boot into startup repair, cant find a problem, auto-restart. . . ). I tried to system restore in the advanced menu of the startup repair but the box to enable system protection so i cant system restore to try and get windows to work.

I dont have another pc available to burn another windows 7 disk but do have a 500GB portable hard drive to spare and surprise o official windows 7 disk either, can anyone help me to get windows to boot again without formatting my hard drive so i can keep all my Precious photos, documents which i haven’t had a chance to back up yet ( that portable hard drive came only a few days ago). Please Help Me If You Can! :) Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Windows 7: Safe to re-install on existing partition?

Hi. Please can someone give me an idea about this? I would be very grateful.

I have a corrupted install of Windows 7 that will not boot. Lots of messages as I’ve been trying to fiddle with it, e. g. (DOS message = ”MBR is missing”) & (”An error occurred while attempting to read the boot configuration data”) & ( \BOOT\BCD & 0xc0000001) with the dreaded black screen, however the good news is the hard drive is detected correctly in the BIOS still. E. g it powers up and spins and is detected. All my files are still on the drive, I haven’t formatted it.

I have tried to use Windows 7 install disc, and the ‘repair’ function does not work (”Windows was unable to repair”) I’m guessing as the hard disk is not detected once the the Windows 7 disc is loaded from the CD drive. However, it still gives me the option to INSTALL Windows 7 again. (Luckily) if I chose CUSTOM install.

Sadly, there is no option to chose NEW partition, but use only the existing ‘broken’ install of Windows 7 already installed as the new partition option is greyed out.

My question please.

If I install a new install of Windows 7, is my old Windows 7 install (with all the files, e. g. desktop, my pictures, my documents) still going to be on the hard drive, or over written entirely?

E. g if my old files are on my desktop on: C:/Users/Maria/Desktop/My_Files
Will my old user account of ‘Maria’ be destroyed? or can I simply make a new user account by reinstalling Windows 7, chose a new name, e. g. Maria_New, and once the desktop comes up, I can navigate back to C:, and chose my old user account of. . . . C:/Users/Maria/Desktop/ and my files are still there? I hope so!!!!

I’d love to know as I am writing a book and have all my files on the hard disk that now refuses to boot up or be ‘repaired’ with Windows 7 Disc. It’s got 3 years worth of writing on the hard disk and I can’t afford to accidently erase it if I re-install Windows 7 on the existing partition.

I have learnt my lesson always to back up files now on an external USB drive!!!!! I apologise to the PC gods out there who know better. :)

Thank you.

windows 7 system restore not working – how do I fix it?

OK, I’ve seen loads of posts by people who have lost their System Restore and I have tried all suggestions but still have the following problem: I can create a System Restore point OK but when I try and roll back to a previous point, it goes through the motions and, when the desktop screen reappears, I get the message that System Restore failed to do a restore. I also checked out a log error and found a report of “error message 8206″

So far I have tried,
SAFE MODE REBOOT – no good,
DISABLE/ENABLE RESTORE – no good
FIDDLING WITH “VOLUME SHADOW SETTING” – no good.

So, what is there left to do??? I’m at my wits end. I did create a system image a few weeks ago but, for all I know, the System Restore problem might have been there when I did it.

I do NOT have any installation disks as I bought the PC off someone with Windows 7 already installed. All I have is a System Repair disk that I created early on (maybe the problem was not there when I created the disk months ago).

Is there any way I can download / rebuild the original registry settings even though I don’t have installation disks??

On a slightly different point, am I too late now to do a disk partition??. Windows was already loaded on my PC and I added all my programs & files. However, they are on the one c: drive. Ideally I would like a separate partition for the OS but I fear it’s too late as it’s all mixed in together and I wouldn’t be able to separate out the OS from all the other things. Is this correct??

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions, especially about System Restore as I think I’ve tried everything!
Jayzel – II think that site you have given is a bogus site, pretending to look like it’s a Microsoft site. Personally I wouldn’t download anything from it – God knows what viruses I might get!!!

hiya,
First things first, i am running on windows 7 Professional 64bit edition.
8GB Consair CL5 DDR2, ASUS MSN-SLI deluxe AMD Phenom 9600 Quadcore 2. 3ghz, Geforce Nvidia 9800GTX+ 1gb. i built the computer all by myself. ran perfectly til recently,

when i press power to power up the pc. it sometimes turn on then off within under a second. i had to unplug all connections and replug and power on, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. sometimes i had to unplug all memory, connections inside the tower etc. and sometimes it turns the pc on.

When it is on finally. it takes forever to boot up, when it finally booting up. it takes a long time to load BIOS page. before the windows appear.

Takes about 2 mins on the windows before the windows welcome appear.

When i am finally on the destop, it takes a moment or so to load everything. i had the pc checked and defragged etc etc and nothing seem to do the trick. i am at a total loss here. i tried reinstall, repair windows 7 and it does not seem to have made any better effect!

Hope i have explained enough? if you need any information from me. let me know and i will gladly provide. i am no pc geek or such, just a daily pc user who like to surf the net and play FPS games.
