Recently moved house and got Virgin Broadband with the standard modem. i have a Netgear EN104 4-ports 10Mbps Ethernet Hub Router so i can connect the 2 PCs in my flat.
I must mention that i am not very technical minded so you may need to speak in simple words!!!
before this i was with Eclipse ISP and connected the router with no troubles. both PCs worked fine and also my Xbox live connection.
Now i have moved flats. My housemate has had his PC connected to the modem and also going through the router and has worked fine for him (it maybe worth noting that this PC is different to my old housemates PC, but mine is still the same)
Since i have been waiting for an ethernet cable long enough to reach the router i have not yet used my PC. anyway, got it last night and connected it up. First thing, Xbox live didnt work, think it failed the IP address test. (1st test after checking it is wired up)
anyway, when using my PC it says limited or no connection whilst my mates still works fine. tried repairing this but it cannot renew my IP address.
I really dont know where to start with this. as i mentioned in my old flat i just plugged it in and it worked fine.
I can have my webcam output shown on some websites which host webcam output, but when I use a video camera the output is black. I am using a firewire link to my computer.

I just need to get to grips with the languages for work, so i was thinking setting a virtual pc up with sql etc installed and tricking my pc to think that this is where my ‘practise site’ is located. is this possible and what the simplest way to go about it?

ok i started to install windows vista with my usb and i would install using the cd but as my cd drive is completely not working i had to install using my usb and i formatted my hard drive (when installing with usb) and everything was going ok but as it had to restart to continue with the installation process, when restarted it would go back to the beggining of the installation and now i don’t know what to do because i can’t install windows vista with my cd as the cd drive is not working, the only thing i can do is go on system recovery options which gives me a list of options:

windows memory diagnostic tool
& command prompt
