Hi all, i am thinking on reformating my pc. it is kinda slow and i cant be botherd uninstalling and repairing. so i come up to reformat it.

I need a guide that will help me to format my machine and install Windows XP SP2 onto it.

I AM backing all of the stuff i want to keep such as projects, downloads and some installers.
Onto DVD’s. . is this wise ? i dont want to splash out on a hdd. i have a ext 40GB which is going to be partily used during back up.

I know i have to change my first boot device to CD/DVD
i just need help once i have hit any key and it starts a blue screen. they kinda intimidate me.

Also, i was reading a little and it seems i might have to install my network card, i have all my other discs, but the only Ethernet port is on the montherboard (connected not a pci thing)
will all them devices get installed when i put my Motherboard Disc into my drive?

hi, i have a toshiba satelite L500 laptop, this evening it slipped of my legs as i was turning it of and fell onto carpeted floor, the bottom right hand corner now has a crack in in about 1cm long so looked ok!,

however i turned it on to check all was ok, but then got an error message saying a problem with the cooler system has been detected please turn of immediatly and return for service.

i could not hear the normal whiring fan noises, up until tonight its been running perfect with no problems.

looking to take it to pc world will cost £229 to be fixed by tech guys. could i fix it myself, or could a local repair man sort it out for me?

Ok. So I just read a question about a slow starting computer. One answer was to do a MSCONFIG. Please know that this could potentially mess up your computer if you disable the wrong thing. Some of the older windows os had it setup where it actually listed the items that were actually needed to run windows in the msconfig area. I can not count the times I’ve had to repair a really bad MSCONFIG. I just feel that it would be terrible if the questioner would have ruined his pc over bad advise. So my question is: You do realize some people are not so sure when they answer. . . . . right? Just checking. -Shell
Well, I’m not going to argue about it for cryin out loud but as an ex-Techie I assure you I’ve had to fix bad MSCONFIGs. It’s kind of like handing a chainsaw to a 10 year old and saying this is how you turn it on and leaving. We all know the 10 year old can turn on the saw but can he safely operate the saw not knowing exactly which way to hold it? So stop emailing me arguments. I was only trying to point out that one should recommend a site that explains all of the important steps in doing a MSCONFIG. The answer said to disable everything and considering that this isn’t such a good idea on some of the windows versions I thought it important to remind people to be careful when following advise. My computer got infected to a state it’s unusable, its as slow to a crawl and nothing will fix it due to the nasty file infector “VIRUT” that infected my files and as of removal of that and the 300 more scanner tests to check were clean and performance tools and msconfig. The computer will simply run fine but it seems to have a nasty problem loading applications, it gets overloaded by the simplest tasks such as avast shields or loading messenger, but when i turn everything of on startup it runs like i just bought it from the exception of some tasks such as updates fail but it’s usable for my needs, its just i know for a fact my computer can run these applications and i cant go around the web without protection, i used to have avast, zonealarm and sandboxie running and the pc wont even make a sound, now im lucky if i can run messenger without it eating itself. It’s ridiculous, I want my PC back, no viruses are present, it’s time to reinstall =”(

Ok, this may be considered as more than one question =( but how do i go around reinstalling, here is some information i need

1) OEM i dont understand what that means but i assume its important, i bought my PC of the shelf, my pc was bought from dell

2) I have an I386 folder on my hard disc which is used for reinstalling but due to virut it is proberly corrupt and i want a clean install

3) I have Windows XP professional service pack 3 which may be important, do i need to consider this when buying an installation disc

So where can i buy a legit copy of Microsoft Windows XP that will allow me to repair my files or reinstall as i need one and i dont know where to buy and if it is gonna work with my machine.

ps. I dont need to know how to install or repair i have previous research knowledge and it is pretty simple to do so
