hi there, hopefully someone can help me with this question. . . .
I used to be a partner in a company, which I then left in December of last year and started up my own business, as usual with these things towards the end it got rather messy.
I`ve since found out that my ex- business partner has registered a domain name identical to my new domain name, but hyphenated i. e. http://www. your-name. co. uk and redirecting to his own companies site . . . . is this within the law? and do I have rights to have him take the domain name down and stop the redirection?
looking forward to your answers.

Yes it is. And no you cant take it down. What you should have done is registered as many variations as possible.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there’s nothing you can do about it. It’s perfectly legal. You can take him to court, but in all probability, it won’t do much good.

However, you may want to use the same domain name as his, but end it with . net, and . org ;-) It’s only about $10 per year. at most domain registration sites.

Have you registered and trademarked the business name? If you haven’t it’ll be a tough battle.

If you have then you might have some luck under the Nominet Dispute Resolution
