I have a blackberry but my instant messaging doesnt work?

I got a blackberry using my mums upgrade and when i use the phone my instant messaging doesnt work. I add people but it doesnt connect. Is this because the phone is locked to my mums sim and not mine? Will unlocking the phone help this situation?

Its not locked to your moms SIM card if you now have yours in there. However it is locked to that network until you unlock it. Thats only if your using a different one than your mother which I’m guessing your not?
I know this is a silly question but do you have unlimited blackberry internet service or BIS on there? Your messenger runs off of data, so if you don’t have that it wont work.
