On July 26th, 2009, the internet service provider AT&T began blocking its customer’s access to 4chan’s IMG server, which hosts the boards /r9k/, Robot 9000, home of the bro-bots and also /b/, Random, home of the bee tards. Many chan users cried foul and complained to AT&T. People were suddenly forced to become aware of internet censorship and Net Neutrality. The reasoning was simple: if AT&T continued to block 4chan.img, what would come next? Anonymous came up with battle plans that involved, real, legal ways of protesting – emails to AT&T addressing the issue, letters to free-speech and anti-censorship organizations, tips to news sites, and other civil ways to let AT&T know how unhappy they were. A few hours later, the block was lifted and Anonymous declared a victory in the name of internet freedom and all internet users everywere. Then shit got heavy. ISPs Comcast and Cognet seemed to also block 4chan entirely. Even users not on any of these ISPs reported downtime. And so, we were completely wrong about everything. This incident was not a result of censorship, but rather a result of a large DDOS attack. And who has enough free time to DDOS the ever-loving life out of 4chan?
